Tomato Leaves Curling? Diagnose the Pattern First

Curl direction is a clue, not a diagnosis
Tomato leaves curl for several reasons. Upward rolling on older lower leaves during heat or moisture stress is often physiological leaf roll and may not reduce yield. Twisted, narrow, fernlike new growth suggests herbicide injury; yellowing, mosaic, stunting, or distorted new growth can point toward virus or pest problems. Inspect the whole pattern before treating anything.
Start by asking which leaves changed first, whether the plant is growing normally, what the soil moisture feels like below the surface, and whether nearby tomatoes or weeds show the same distortion. One curled leaflet is gossip. The location and progression are evidence.
Build a six-part symptom record
Photograph the plant from a distance, then both surfaces of affected leaves. Record:
- Old lower leaves, middle canopy, or newest growth.
- Upward roll, downward curl, cupping, twisting, or narrow straps.
- Normal green, pale, yellow, mottled, purple, spotted, or scorched tissue.
- Normal stems and fruit or distorted growth elsewhere.
- Soil moisture, recent heat, rain, transplanting, pruning, or root injury.
- Herbicide, fertilizer, compost, manure, mulch, or spray exposure nearby.
Check at least several plants, including other species along the garden edge. Growth-regulator herbicide drift may distort tomatoes, grapes, beans, and ornamentals unevenly depending on wind and exposure. A virus may appear in scattered plants associated with an insect vector or infected transplant. Heat stress may affect most tomatoes in the same dry bed.
Do not spray a fungicide, insecticide, nutrient, or homemade mixture just because “curl” appears in a search result. Curled leaves are a shape shared by unrelated problems.
Physiological leaf roll usually starts low
Physiological leaf roll is common in tomatoes during high temperatures and moisture stress. Older lower leaves roll upward along their length while remaining fairly green and otherwise normal. Some cultivars show it more readily. University of Maryland Extension notes that this common midsummer pattern does not harm plant growth or yield.
Triggers can include dry soil, abrupt moisture changes, heavy pruning, root disturbance, transplant stress, or saturated soil that limits root oxygen. The plant may be reducing exposed leaf area or responding to disrupted water balance.
What to do
Check soil several inches deep. If dry at root level, water deeply at the base; if saturated, pause irrigation and address drainage. Maintain an even moisture supply with organic mulch kept off the stem. Avoid removing large amounts of foliage at once, damaging roots with cultivation, or flooding a previously dry bed.
Leave green rolled leaves attached. They still photosynthesize, and removing them adds stress. New growth may look more normal when conditions stabilize, while rolled older leaves may not flatten completely.
If the plant is stunted, yellow, spotted, wilted despite suitable moisture, or producing distorted new growth, physiological roll is no longer the complete explanation.
Water stress can mean too dry or too wet
A wilted or curled tomato does not always need more water. Saturated soil excludes oxygen from roots, reducing their ability to function. A plant can look thirsty while standing in a root-zone puddle.
Probe the soil rather than judging the crust. In containers, check through several depths and confirm drainage holes remain open. Lift smaller pots to learn their watered and dry weights. Empty saucers after irrigation unless a specific self-watering design uses them.
Water deeply enough to moisten the active root zone, then water again based on soil, weather, plant size, and container volume—not a rigid daily ritual. Drip or soaker irrigation keeps foliage drier than overhead watering and reduces soil splash.

Herbicide injury targets new growth dramatically
Tomatoes are sensitive to growth-regulator herbicides. Exposure can produce narrow, twisted, cupped, strapped, or fernlike leaves, bent stems, abnormal veins, and misshapen fruit. New growth often shows the strongest distortion because the chemical disrupts growth processes.
Exposure can come from direct misapplication or drift, but also from a sprayer previously used for herbicide, treated lawn clippings used as mulch, or manure and compost containing persistent herbicide residues. Wind speed, direction, temperature inversions, application timing, and dose influence the pattern.
Stop using suspect compost, manure, mulch, or equipment. Photograph symptoms and nearby plants, save product labels and amendment records, and contact local extension. If drift may have come from another property, remain factual and follow local reporting guidance.
Do not add fertilizer to “push the damage out.” Extra growth does not remove exposure and may create another stress. Recovery depends on dose, chemical, plant stage, and whether the source persists. Do not consume produce until local extension, the pesticide regulator, or other qualified guidance addresses the exposure.
Viruses usually bring more than rolling
Tomato viruses can cause curling, but often also produce yellow or green mosaic, mottling, rings, bronzing, dark-green banding, stunting, shortened internodes, distorted flowers, or abnormal fruit. Different viruses and strains create overlapping symptoms; visual diagnosis alone can be unreliable.
Inspect for whiteflies, thrips, aphids, leafhoppers, and other possible vectors without assuming every insect present transmitted a virus. Some viruses arrive in infected transplants or spread through tools, seed, weeds, or mechanical contact.
Isolate suspicious seedlings from healthy stock. Wash hands and disinfect tools according to extension guidance before moving between plants. Do not save seed from a plant with an unconfirmed systemic disorder. Send clear photographs or a sample through local extension or a plant diagnostic laboratory.
Virus management may require removing confirmed infected plants and controlling vectors or weed hosts. There is no general spray that cures a virus inside a tomato plant. A blue bottle promising “plant immunity” has not been promoted to virologist.
Mites and sap-feeding insects distort small areas first
Aphids, broad mites, russet mites, whiteflies, thrips, and leafhoppers can cause curling, distortion, stippling, bronzing, yellowing, or stunting. The pest may be tiny, concentrated on new growth, or hidden beneath leaves.
Use a hand lens and inspect leaf undersides, growing tips, flowers, stems, and nearby weeds. Tap foliage over white paper to reveal moving specks. Look for sticky honeydew, cast skins, webbing, stippling, or bronzed stems, but remember each clue fits a narrower group.
Get identification before treatment. A product labeled for aphids may not control mites; broad-spectrum insecticides can kill beneficial insects and worsen some mite problems. Use only a product labeled for tomatoes and the identified pest in your jurisdiction, following reentry and preharvest intervals.
Nutrient and root problems need testing
Nutrient deficiency can change leaf shape and color, but pattern matters. Nitrogen, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, micronutrients, salt injury, high or low pH, and root damage produce different combinations of old-versus-new leaf symptoms.
Obtain a soil test before adding lime, calcium, magnesium, or broad fertilizer. In containers, review the potting mix, fertilizer concentration, drainage, irrigation water, and salt buildup. Excess fertilizer can burn roots and curl leaves just as deficiency can limit growth.
Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfur. It does not treat heat stress, herbicide injury, waterlogging, virus, or an unknown mite. Use it only when a reliable test and local recommendation identify magnesium need.
Roots may also be restricted by a small pot, compacted soil, cultivation injury, nematodes, rot, or a damaged stem. Compare root condition only when sampling will not destroy the plant or when a diagnostic lab requests it.
Leaf spots point toward a different decision tree
If curl accompanies brown lesions, yellow halos, target rings, water-soaked areas, or white growth, investigate foliar disease. Early blight, late blight, Septoria leaf spot, bacterial spot, and other diseases can reduce healthy leaf area and distort affected tissue.

Do not work among wet plants when infectious disease is suspected. Avoid overhead irrigation, sanitize tools as directed, and bag samples before transport. A diseased leaf flapping from the passenger seat is a sample with travel ambitions.
Plant timing can prevent the first stress spiral
Cold soil, frost exposure, abrupt sun, and wind can injure new transplants and produce curled or damaged foliage. Follow when to plant tomatoes using local frost risk, forecast, soil temperature, and hardening—not hardiness zone alone.
Harden plants gradually, support them at planting, water the root ball and surrounding soil, and protect without overheating. A transplant moved from greenhouse calm into bright wind may curl before any pest arrives.
Escalate when the pattern is systemic or fast
Contact extension or a diagnostic lab when new growth is severely distorted, multiple plant families are affected, mosaic or stunting appears, plants decline rapidly, herbicide exposure is possible, or water-soaked lesions spread during cool wet weather.
Provide location, cultivar, planting date, irrigation, soil test, amendments, pesticides used, nearby applications, symptom timeline, and photographs. Keep a symptomatic sample separate and follow submission instructions.
Most curled leaves do not need an emergency potion. They need a pattern: which leaf, which direction, which color, which neighbor, and what changed. Once those answers agree, the tomato stops being mysterious and returns to its usual role—complicated, edible, and slightly offended by July.
